VEGAN RADIO BUMPERS
In broadcasting, a bumper is a brief announcement that can contain a voice over, placed between a pause in the program and its commercial break, and vice versa. Vegan Radio began as a radio show on Valley Free Radio in Northampton, MA and was simultaneously recorded to become a podcast. We loved to create bumpers even though we didn't have commercials, just because it was fun to mimic radio tropes. These are some of our faves:
Gene Baur
Farm Sanctuary’s co-founder, back when he was still going by Gene Bauston. He is a handsome man, and we thought it was funny to have some sexy music playing in the background. Gene has graced many of our shows.
Sarah Kramer
Sarah Kramer was one of the first vegan cookbook authors to make vegan cooking look hip, with her breakthrough cookbook How it all Vegan. We have always been big fans of hers, and got to meet her at a MooShoes event in 2005, She is featured in several of our shows.
Howard Lyman
Howard Lyman, the Mad Cowboy. He is a rancher turned vegan who famously stood up to the meat industry alongside Oprah Winfrey. He’s always witty, has a fatherly quality that is endearing, and is a great speaker. Howard was the featured interview on our first show!
John Darnielle
John is the singer/songwriter of the Mountain Goats, and played at Farm Sanctuary in 2007 for a weekend fundraising event called Zoop, named after a favorite goat at the farm. We featured an interview with him on show 40.
Hannah Kaminsky
Hannah is the author of My Sweet Vegan, Vegan a la Mode, Vegan Desserts, and Easy as Vegan Pie, and creator of the award-winning blog BitterSweetBlog.com. When we met her she was only 19 years old and attending UMass college in Amherst, and we had to get her mom’s permission to record the interview featured on Vegan Radio podcast #52.
Bruce Friedrich
Bruce Friedrich is an animal activist and advocate who has worked for PeTA and Farm Sanctuary, and is the co-founder of The Good Food Institute.
Scott Lahteine
Scott made invaluable contributions to Vegan Radio as co-host, news anchorman, website programmer, Vegan Bus grease pirate, and dedicated friend of people and animals. A musician himself, he designed FretPet, an app for guitar players. He used that and other computer wizardry to create the original Vegan Radio theme song, as well as several bumpers. Here are some favorites:
